American soldier, born at Moreton Hampstead, Devonshire, England, on the 21st of September 1757, and emigrated to America in 1772. He studied law in Savannah, GA, and in 1776 was active in repelling the British from that city. He afterward took part in many important battles and attained the rank of brigadier-general. In 1788 he was chosen governor of Georgia, but declined to serve, and from 1789 to 1791 was a member of the First Congress. From 1793 to 1795 he was United States Senator from Georgia, from 1798 to 1801 governor of the state, and from 1801 to his death was again Senator. He died in Washington, DC, on the 16th of March 1806.
