British poet and man of letters, born at Edinburgh in 1721, and began life as a teacher near London. He became the close friend of Dr. Johnson, whose Rambler he edited in eight volumes. In the face of much public ridicule, Elphinston for years persisted in an attempt to change the orthography of the English language to a phonetic basis. He died in 1809.
