[Jacques].  French historian, born at Fontenay-Vendée on the 23rd of September 1803. He studied theology in Paris, and became a supporter and defender of royalty and the church. He wrote a History of the Jesuits, in six volumes, which is his best-known work (4th ed., 1856). His other publications include Histoire de la Vendée Militaire (1864); Histoire de Louis Philippe (1867); and Le Pope Clement XIV (1853). He died at Vincennes on the 1st of January 1875.
