Clergyman and writer of religious history, born in Norwich, CT, on the 9th of January 1724; died in Titicut, CT, on the 20th of November 1806. He was at first a Congregationalist, but changed to the Baptist Church in 1756; in 1774 was sent to Congress by the Warren Baptist churches to claim the same rights accorded other churches; in 1788 was a delegate to the convention that adopted the Federal constitution. He wrote many historical articles, the chief among them being a History of New England, with Special Reference to the Baptists, a denomination that has a historical society named for him.
