[Henry Dilwood].  American jurist and author, born in England on the 14th of April 1801; removed to Pennsylvania and practiced law in Philadelphia. He became successively United States attorney for Pennsylvania, solicitor of the Treasury, and in 1840 Attorney-General of the United States. By authority of Congress he supervised the publication of the papers of James Madison (purchased by the government from Mrs. Madison for thirty thousand dollars), which appeared in 1840. He wrote many biographies of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. He died in Philadelphia on the 29th of January 1860.
