German novelist, born in Fulda, Germany, on the 19th of March 1790; entered the civil service of Hesse, but devoted much of his time to writing historical novels, which were quite successful and showed much honesty of purpose and careful research; his best effort is undoubtedly his William Shakespeare (1850), surrounding the Bard of Avon with the graceful details of a poetical romance. Among his many books may be mentioned Die Hohe Braut (1833); Die Klubbisten in Mainz (1847); König Jerome’s Karneval (1855). He died in Wiesbaden, in 1869.
