American writer; born in Danvers, MA. She first attracted public attention by her translations of Sainte-Beuve, Musset, Mistral, and other French writers. Among her original writings are Love in the Nineteenth Century (1874); Troubadours and Trouvères (1876); and A Year in Eden (1886).
