American author, born in California. She commenced at an early age to depict the Old-World calm of the missions of her native state. Her Los Cerritos, a story of Mexican-American life, was a success, from the fidelity of its portraiture. Her later works were A Whirl Asunder; The Doomswoman; Patience Sparhawk and Her Times; and a graphic study of old Mexican days, Before the Gringo Came. Mrs. Atherton became a permanent resident in London, England, shortly after the publication of her earliest work. See also The Conqueror and Julia France and Her Times.
