American educator, born at Oramel, NY, on the 30th of January 1857; educated at Cortland Academy, Cornell, Leipsic and Zurich universities, the Sorbonne and L’École des Chartes, Paris; in 1878 he was appointed librarian of the White Library, Cornell, and later professor of ancient and modern history at Cornell. His books include The Literature of Witchcraft (1890); The Fate of Dietrich Flade (1891); Charlemagne; and numerous magazine articles and reviews.
