[George Henry].  American jurist, born at New Lebanon, NY, on the 23rd of March 1823; educated at an academy in Onondaga County, he studied law, and began practicing in Iowa in 1844. He served as judge of the first judicial district of Iowa (1847–52); was a Presidential elector (1852); was chief justice of Oregon territory (1853–57); a member of the convention that framed the Oregon constitution (1857); United States Senator from Oregon (1865–71); a member of the commission that framed the Treaty of Washington between the United States and Great Britain relative to the Alabama claims (1871); Attorney-General under President Grant (1872–75); and practiced law in Washington, DC, after resigning from the Cabinet.
