American theologian and exegete, born on the 19th of March 1815, at Pittsfield, MA. After graduation from Yale College and Theological Seminary, he became assistant in sacred literature in the latter institution, continuing in that position until 1840. The next eleven years of his life were spent in pastoral duties at Marlboro and Northampton, MA. In 1851 he was elected professor of Biblical literature in Lane Theological Seminary, and in 1866 professor of Hebrew in the theological department of his alma mater. He frequently contributed to theological journals, and was editor of the Theological Eclectic. In 1871 he translated the Biblical Theology of the New Testament of van Oosterzee, and in 1883 edited Oehler’s Biblical Theology of the Old Testament.
