[George Charles].  Warden of Merton College, Oxford, born at Castle Rising, Norfolk, England, on the 5th of May 1831; his father being the late Viscount Midleton. He went to Balliol College from Eton, and graduated at the former in 1854, and was elected a fellow of Merton College the following year. He obtained many high scholastic honors, and in 1858 carried off the law scholarship at the University of London, where he received the degree of LL.B. In 1885 he was made D.C.L. of Oxford. He has published Political Studies (1880); English Land and English Landlords (1881); The Reform of the English Land System (1883); Memorials of Merton College (1885); History of the University of Oxford (1886); besides many important articles in the Nineteenth Century and Fraser’s Magazine.
