American clergyman and author, born in Jamaica, Long Island, in 1814. He graduated at Princeton in 1834; took orders in the Protestant Episcopal Church in 1847, and thereafter held pastorales in Huntington, Long Island, Fishkill, NY, and Montpelier, VT. In 1864 he moved to Carthage Landing, NY, and devoted himself to authorship. Among his works are The Trollopiad, a satirical poem (1837); Up the River, sketches on the Hudson (1853); and Parish Sketch Book (1855); besides numerous contributions to the Knickerbocker Magazine. He died on the 20th of June 1881.
