English novelist and dramatist, born in 1849. He was educated at Brighton College and the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, whence he entered the Second Queen’s Royal Regiment, where he remained until January 1884, when he was called to the bar. Aside from those he has written in collaboration with Percy Fendall and C. J. Wills, his principal novels are The Dean and His Daughter (1887) and As in a Looking-Glass (1885), the latter having been published in every capital in Europe. Among his plays are The Dean’s Daughter, founded on his novel The Dean and His Daughter, the play being written in collaboration with Sydney Grundy; Godpapa, written with Charles Brookfield; and The Burglar and the Judge, also written in collaboration with Brookfield. As a practicing London barrister Mr. Philips appeared in some important cases.
