American historical writer, born in New York City on the 10th of October 1823. He received his education in New York, and studied law in Harvard, but practiced for only a short time; traveled in Europe, devoting his time to study in all the large libraries. On his return he turned his attention to writing, contributing to several magazines; edited a Smaller History of Rome; published Lives of British Historians (1855); Historical Studies (1856); The Jews and their Persecutors; and Columbus and His Contemporaries. He died on the 17th of August 1894.
