French author and dramatist, born on the 20th of February, 1813, at Saumur. His Les Premiers Fiacres was presented at the Pantheon, Paris, in 1841, and was followed by several other plays, but his fame chiefly rests upon his historical writings, which include History of the Peasants; The Vendée in 1793; Popular History of France; History of the Wars of Religion in the Sixteenth Century; and Peasants of the Nineteenth Century.
