American general and author, born at Vergennes, VT, on the 18th of May 1798. After graduating at West Point in 1817, he was assistant instructor in tactics there until 1829, and from that time till 1833 he was commandant of cadets. In the Mexican War he was inspector-general under Scott. Becoming colonel in 1851, he was placed in command on the Pacific coast. When the Civil War broke out he was appointed major-general of volunteers in the Union army in February 1862, and soon afterward made commissary-general of prisoners. He retired from service in October 1867, and died at Sparta, GA, on the 5th of August 1870.
