[or Étienne].  French writer and philosopher, born in Sarlat, France, on the 1st of November 1530. He was not twenty years old when he wrote his strong pamphlet entitled Contre-un, or a Discours sur la Servitude Volontaire, which was published in 1575. He sat in the Parliament of Bordeaux during the last ten years of his life. He was a personal friend of Montaigne, who wrote about him most feelingly. He died near Bordeaux on the 10th of August 1563.
