[Emil Gustav].  American Jewish rabbi, born in the Grand Duchy of Luxemburg, on the 22nd of May 1851; emigrated to the United States in 1866; educated in America and Germany, being a graduate of the universities of Pennsylvania, Berlin and Leipsic. He has held the position of rabbi in the cities of Baltimore, MD; Louisville, KY; and Chicago, IL; a professor of Semitic languages in the University of Chicago; director of the Chicago Public Library, having been twice president of the Board of Directors; president of the Board of Examiners of the Civil Service Commission. Dr. Hirsch has published a volume of sermons, and Truths of Fiction from a Jewish Point of View.
