American jurist, born in New York City on the 21st of June 1746; died in Jamaica, Long Island, on the 24th of August 1833. He was graduated at Columbia College in 1765; became attorney-general of his state in 1777; a member of the “committee of safety,” of the first legislature, and of the Continental Congress from 1784 to 1788; was judge of the supreme court of New York from 1794 to 1802; member of Congress from 1789 to 1793 and from 1813 to 1815. He published two books, A Vindication of the Captors of André and a Memoir on Dutch Names.
