[Edward Carlisle].  American soldier and writer of military history, born in 1824, in Vermont, and retired from the United States army, December 1, 1872. In 1846 he graduated from West Point, and directly joined the army in Mexico, where he performed gallant service, and was severely wounded in the battle of Churubusco. From 1848 to 1855 he was an instructor at West Point, and in the latter year participated in a campaign against the Indians of Florida. In February 1856, he left the service, and became professor of chemistry in the University of Mississippi, where he remained until the outbreak of the Civil War. In 1861 he was reappointed captain in the United States service, and was assigned to duty at West Point, where he remained throughout the war, receiving at its close a major’s brevet. Major Boynton’s writings include History of West Point and Several Orders of George Washington, issued at Newburgh.
