American soldier, born in Culpeper County, VA, on the 20th of March 1777; died in New Orleans on the 6th of June 1849. He entered the army in 1799, became major, then colonel, and in 1814 brigadier-general. The same year he was brevetted major-general for gallant conduct at Fort Erie, where he was severely wounded. He also received the thanks of Congress, with a gold medal. He was afterward active against the Seminoles in Florida, and in 1836 conducted an expedition against Osceola, in which he was again severely wounded. He was noted for simplicity and uprightness of character.
