American lawyer; born in Cherry Valley, NY, in 1839; died in Schenectady, NY, on the 7th of March 1893. He was graduated at Union College in 1860; took part in the Civil War, attaining the rank of major; began the practice of law in New York City in 1866. He retired from active practice a few years before his death. He published The Puritan in Holland, England and America: An Introduction to American History.
