Spanish soldier, born in Sotés, Spain, on the 7th of May 1808. As captain-general of Catalonia, he took part in the revolution of 1854. He is known, however, by reason of his conduct as captain-general of Cuba from 1862 to 1866, when he did much to abolish the Cuban slave trade. Upon his return to Spain he took part in the Prim conspiracy against Isabel II. He retired to Amélie-les-Bains to recuperate his failing health, where he died, December 1869.
