English novelist, born in West Bromwich, on the 13th of April 1847. He served as reporter and then as war correspondent for the Scotsman and Times in the Russo-Turkish War. In 1879 he published A Life’s Atonement in Chambers’ Journal. Other works are By the Gate of the Sea (1882); A Dangerous Catspaw (1889); Bob Martin’s Little Girl (1892); A Wasted Crime (1893); The Making of a Novelist (1894); The Martyred Fool (1895).
