American novelist and journalist, born on the 25th of July 1848, at Washington, DC, a grandson of the poet, Joseph Rodman Drake. He became literary editor of the New York Times in 1877, and held that position until 1894, when he was appointed United States consul to Berlin. He has published The Bohemian (1878); Hesperus, and Other Poems (1880); Love Poems of Louis Barnaval (1883); and Barye: Life and Works (1889). See also “Arcana Sylvarum,” etc.
