American educator and historian, born at Derby, VT, on the 24th of January 1835, and educated at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, where he graduated in 1861. He served for many years as professor of history in that institution, and in 1881 obtained a like position at Cornell University, Ithaca, NY. In 1885 he became president of that university. This position he resigned in May 1892, and became president of the Wisconsin University at Madison. Among his works are a Manual of Historical Literature; Democracy and Monarchy in France, and other aids to study.
