Chief of the Narragansett Indians at the time of the landing of the Pilgrim Fathers at Plymouth in 1620; died on the 4th of June 1647. He gave to the colonists of Roger Williams the land upon which stands the city of Providence. It was this chief who sent to Governor Bradford a rattlesnake-skin stuffed with arrows as an indication of hostility, and to whom the governor returned the skin stuffed with powder and bullets.
