French writer upon historical and literary subjects, born at Francières, Oise. After many years spent in study and authorship, and travel in France, Italy and Germany, he was chosen professor of ancient literature at Montpellier, France. In 1879 he became a member of the faculty of the University of Paris. Chief among his writings are Giacomo Leopardi: His Life and Works; History of Divination in Antiquity; and History of Greece under the Roman Domination.
