[Charles Alphonse].  French novelist, born at Paris on the 12th of April 1807. After being for a time engaged in a law office and then in a bank, he adopted the profession of literature and became chief of the bureau of printing in the Department of the Interior. In 1830 he made his first literary attempt before the public, with Chants d’Amour, which he followed in 1833 with Priez pour Elle! (1833); Ainsi Soit-il! (1833); Jane Grey (1835; 3d ed., 1838); La Comtesse aux Trois Galants (1839); Les Secrets de Famille (1841); La Sirène de Paris (1845); Le Réveil-Matin (1847); La Terre Promise (1848); Deux Coups de Tonnerre (1853); Les Deux Péchés (1857); La Cousine du Roi (1855); Miss Million (1880); La Déesse Raison (1881); Les Compagnons de l’Arche (1881); the two latter with M. Saint-Véran. Besides the above, M. Brot has produced several dramas in collaboration with others.
