[Agnes Catherine].  English authoress and educator, born in London in 1849. She was educated at home, and in 1877 appointed examiner to the Northern Union of Schools of Cookery; was principal in 1889 of Somerville Hall, Oxford, which became a college in 1894, during her administration. Miss Maitland lectured on the subject of higher education for women, and published Elsie (1875); A Woman’s Victory (1877); Rhoda (1885); several volumes of juvenile stories and cookery books. She also wrote Cottage Lectures on Health (1889).
