Chem. Also -on. [f. prec. + -ONE.] A colorless, tasteless, crystalline substance obtained from the bark of mezereon, and, by distillation, from various umbellifers.
1868. Watts, Dict. Chem., V. 938. Umbelliferone forms colourless rhombic prisms, having a faint silky lustre.
1876. Harley, Royles Mat. Med. (ed. 6), 598. The resin yields oils of a green or purple tint, and about 1/4 per cent. of umbelliferone, C9H6C3, which is isomeric with quinone.
