Chem. [f. TRI- 5 + PALMITIN: cf. TRIACETIN.] A crystalline substance, also called palmitin or glyceryl tripalmitate, C3H5(C16H31O2)3, occurring in palm-oil and in many animal and vegetable fats and oils, and prepared synthetically by Berthelot.
1855. Q. Jrnl. Chem. Soc., VII. 283. Natural margarin and palmitin as well as the artificial compounds identical with them, appear indeed to be trimargarin and tripalmitin.
1913. Thorpe, Dict. App. Chem. (ed. 2), IV. 78. By heating palmitic acid with glycerol, the mono-, di-, and tri- palmitins are prepared.
