Anat. Pl. -æ. [mod.L. f. STERN-UM, with ending of VERTEBRA.] Any one of the segments of the sternum or breast-bone, each corresponding to a pair of ribs. Also (in some recent Dicts.) in anglicized form sterneber.
1881. Mivart, Cat, 50. It consists of a chain of eight bones, called sternebræ.
1898. Rolleston & Jackson, Forms Anim. Life, 362. The last sternebra sometimes giving attachment to more than one pair of ribs.
