Pl. -a; rarely anglicized as bactery. [mod.L., ad. Gr. βακτήριον, dim. of βάκτρον stick, staff.] A genus of Schizomycetæ, microscopic unicellular rod-shaped vegetable organisms, various species of which are found in all decomposing animal and vegetable liquids.
