Zool. [ad. mod.L. Loxodonta pl. (Cuvier), f. Gr. λοξ-ός oblique + ὀδοντ-, ὀδούς tooth.] ‘A sub-genus of elephants, so called from the rhomb-shaped discs of the worn molars’ (Ogilvie, 1882).
