[Maori, f. kaka parrot + po night.] The ground-parrot or owl-parrot of New Zealand, Strigops habroptilus, with green plumage, marked with dark-brown and yellow.

1852. Lyall, in Proc. Zool. Soc. Lond., 32. The Kakapo lives in holes under the roots of trees, and is also occasionally found under shelving rocks.
1893. Newton, Dict. Birds, 475. In captivity the Kakapo is said to show much intelligence, as well as an affectionate and playful disposition.
