OF. artill(i)er to fortify, provide with engines of war:—L. *articulāre; apparently f. late L. articula or articulum (Du Cange), dim. of ars, artem art. Cf. engine from ingenium. But some would connect these words with articulus joint.] A maker of artillery; spec. a bowyer.
