REV. ROBERT COLLYER, one of the most eloquent public speakers and writers of the second half of the nineteenth century, was born in Yorkshire, England, December 8th, 1823. His family belonged to the working classes and he learned the blacksmith’s trade, supporting himself at the forge during the early years of his work as a Wesleyan minister. After coming to America in 1847, he became a Unitarian in 1850. In 1860, he founded Unity Church in Chicago; and after a pastorate of several years in that city, took charge of the Church of the Messiah in New York. Among his works are “Nature and Life,” “Lectures to Young Men and Young Women,” etc.
