ANTHONY ASHLEY COOPER, third Earl of Shaftesbury, was born in London, February 26th, 1671. He had for a teacher no less a person than John Locke, by whom he was subjected to an experimental system of education which succeeded so well that at the age of eleven Shaftesbury had already acquired the mastery of the classical languages for which he was noted. His chief work, “Characteristics of Men, Manners, Opinions, and Times,” appeared in 1711. His “Inquiry concerning Virtue” and other notable essays were included in it. He died at Naples, February 15th, 1713.
