AUGUST WILHELM VON SCHLEGEL, celebrated for his essays on art and poetry, as well as for his own verses, was born at Hannover, September 8th, 1767. After studying at Göttingen and teaching in Amsterdam, he became professor of Literature and Æsthetics at Jena in 1798. Leaving this position in 1801, he taught at Berlin and spent several years in travel, remaining for some time in Sweden where he was “ennobled.” In 1818 he became professor of Literature and Æsthetics at Bonn and remained there until his death, May 12th, 1845. His “Lectures on Dramatic Literature,” delivered in Vienna, were published between 1809 and 1811. His first volume of poems appeared in 1800, and the first of his celebrated translations from Shakespeare in 1797.
