1861.  Gloucestershire Chron., 23 March, 3/2. The brass plates … were brought from Flanders and the neighbouring provinces, and were called ‘latten’ or brass, and ‘Cullen plate,’ a corruption of Ceulon, Cöln, or Cologne, where most of them were made.

1890.  Daily News, 21 Oct., 5/2. The durable material is an alloy of copper and zinc, called Cullen plates, from Cologne, the old seat of the manufacture.
