1842–76.  Gwilt, Encycl. Archit., Gloss., Counter Drain, a drain parallel to a canal or embanked water-course, for collecting the soakage water by the side of the canal or embankment to a culvert or arched drain under the canal, by which it is conveyed to a lower level.
