[Sp. coquina (Minsheu, 1623) shell-fish, cockle, deriv. of OSp. coca = F. coque:L. *cocca, by-form of concha mussel, shell.] A soft whitish rock of recent formation in the West Indies and Florida (where it is used as a building material), made up of fragments of marine shells united by a calcareous cement.
