Bot. [L. agrōstis, ad. Gr. ἄγρωστις some kind of grass; f. ἀγρός field.] A genus of grasses known commonly as Bent.
1753. Chambers, Cycl. Supp., Agrostis is commonly used for the species of grass called quick-grass or couch-grass.
1866. Moore, in Treas. Bot., I. 31/2. The Falkland Islands, Nootka Sound, and Tasmania, may be quoted as some of the outlying stations for the species of Agrostis.
