1864.  Daily Tel., 15 July, 3/3. Captain Heaton, out of 27 shots at 500 yards made 26 bull’s-eyes, of which 13 were cartons…. These Swiss carton targets, at which the Vernon prizes are shot for, were so crowded during the day [etc.].
