[f. Carolus, Latinized form of Karl, Charles.] A gold piece struck in the reign of Charles I.; originally valued at 20s., but afterwards at 23s. The name has been given to various other coins bearing Carolus as the name of the monarch; e.g., a Carolus dollar.
